French courses and certifications

A B2/C1 level certification is required by the teaching staff in order to enrol in a course at Sorbonne Nouvelle University. Please contact the department and/or the course you are interested in for more information.

Depending on your objectives, the Sorbonne Nouvelle has an adapted response. The offers presented below correspond to the different levels of mastery of French determined in the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR):

  • A1: Beginner
  • A2: Elementary
  • B1: Intermediate
  • B2: Upper Intermediate
  • C1: Advanced
  • C2: Master

Official French Certifications
DELF / DALF / TCF
DELF - Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française and DALF - Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française are official diplomas issued by the French Ministry of National Education.

These certifications are intended for non-French speakers who wish to demonstrate their level of French proficiency. They provide international recognition.

The Continuing Education Service (SFC) offers preparation courses and examination sessions:
  • DELF-DALF preparation course
    20 hours of classes
    Levels B2/C1
  • DELF-DALF examination session
    2 sessions per year

The TCF - Test de Connaissance du Français is a certification recognised by the French Ministry of National Education as part of the Demande d'Admission Préalable (DAP).


Paid intensive courses
(Summer / Winter)
The Continuing Education Service (SFC) offers short-term intensive training courses.

Summer and winter courses allow students to deepen their knowledge of the French language and culture. Courses and activities are organized.

Two sessions are held each year:
  • In Summer
    Intensive course before the start of the academic year
    3 weeks in July - 60 hours
  • In Winter (not available in 2023/24)
    Intensive course between the two academic semesters
    2 weeks in January - 40 hours


Center for Language Resources (CRL)
A Center for Language Resources (CRL) is a structure that offers a range of physical and digital resources.

These resources allow university users (students, teachers, staff) to learn foreign languages, independently or semi-independently.
