Les analystes des scènes metal ou punk contemporaines dans le monde occidental ont montré l’attractivité jamais démentie de ces genres de rock pour des public souvent considérés dans les années 1970 et 1980 comme les « losers de la mondialisation » et ce malgré la grande fragmentation de ces scènes et des caractéristiques sociales de leurs publics ces quarante dernières années aux Etats Unis et en Grande Bretagne comme en France (voir par exemple Guibert et Guibert, 2015 ; Brown, 2016 ; Weinstein, 2011 ; Waksman, 2009 ;  Edwards et al., 2018). Cette journée d’étude vise à stimuler et contribuer aux débats sur le rapport que les deux subcultures entretiennent avec la classe ouvrière, les classes populaires, et plus largement les classes sociales et la mondialisation des échanges économiques et culturels à travers des approches à la fois contemporaines et historiques, localisées en Grande Bretagne, en France ou dans d’autres pays. Les contributions qui étudient l’articulation des rapports de pouvoir en termes de classe avec ceux de genre ou liées aux situations postcoloniales ou post-esclavagistes étaient également bienvenues lors de l'appel à contribution. La journée dirigée par Romain Garbaye (laboratoire Crew) et Gérôme Guibert (laboratoire Irméccen) accueillent trois chercheur.se.s invité.e.s d'honneurs (Keynotes), Andy Brown, Rosemary Lucy Hill (Grande Bretagne) et Pierig Humeau (France).


Analysts of the punk and metal contemporary scenes of North America and Western Europe have shown the lasting popularity of these sub-genres of rock music for segments of the public who were often considered in the 1970s and 1980s as “losers of globalization”, despite the high level of fragmentation of these scenes, and despite the diversity of their audiences’ social backgrounds (see for instance Guibert and Guibert, 2015 ; Brown, 2016 ; Weinstein, 2011 ; Waksman, 2009 ; Edwards et al., 2018). This one-day conference aims to stimulate and contribute to debates on the relations between these two subcultures and the “working class”, or socio-economically disadvantaged populations, and more widely social class and economic and cultural globalization, through both contemporary and historical approaches in Britain, France and beyond. The contributions also deal with the articulation of power relations in terms of social class with those defined in terms of gender, and papers related to post-colonial or post-slavery situations were also encouraged in the initial call for papers. The conference is organized by Romain Garbaye of the Centre for Research on the English-speaking World (CREW) and Gérôme Guibert of the Institut de Recherche Médias, Cultures, Communication et Numérique (IRMECCEN) at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris. It features three keynote speakers : Andy Brown and Rosemary Lucy Hill (Britain), and Pierig Humeau (France)
