Register to Social Security and subscribe to a complementary health insurance



Registration to French Social Security is free of charge and mandatory for all students in France, whether they are French or foreign.
It means your health costs will be covered throughout the duration of your studies.

Before your arrival in France


International students from the European Union

Before you arrive in France, you must apply to the social security organisation in your country of origin for your European Health Insurance Card (CEAM).

This organisation will continue to cover your healthcare costs in France.
International students from outside the European Union

Before arriving in France, you must bring the following documents in digital format:

- proof of identity (passport)
- proof of civil status (birth certificate)
- a valid student visa

Your arrival in France



As soon as you arrive in France and have obtained your school-leaving certificate:

Register on the decicated Assurance Maladie website: https://etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr
Puis, saisissez les informations obligatoires et déposez les pièces justificatives demandées.
Il est préconisé de déposer vos pièces justificatives en une seule fois :
- un justificatif d'identité (passeport)
- un justificatif d'état civil (acte de naissance)
- un visa étudiant en cours de validité
- un certificat de scolarité pour l'année universitaire en cours
- un titre de séjour

A l'issue de ces étapes, votre espace personnel est créé.
Vous pourrez y accéder à partir de l'adresse mail renseignée lors de votre inscription.


 

Subscribe to a complementary health insurance

  • Complementary health insurances (or « mutuelles ») are private and charged organizations that allow you to complete your health insurance reimbursements. Subscribing to a complementary health insurance is not mandatory but it is strongly recommended, in the event of major health expenses (dental, optical, hospitalisation...).
     
  • You are advised to request several estimates and compare the offers. You can contact :

- Student insurances 
- Generalist insurances and insurance companies
- Banks

  • Make sure the complementary insurance you choose offers a civil liability (“responsabilité civile”) valid for both your private life and your student life.
     
  • If you have already subscribed to a health insurance covering your expenses in France from your home country. In this case, you do not have  to subscribe  to a complementary insurance in France again.
