Theatre Summer School 2019 / Paris - Avignon

Welcome to the Sorbonne Nouvelle University's second Theatre Summer School on the theme of "Places and spaces".

This Summer School is a unique opportunity for students from all over the world to benefit from the distinctive education of our Drama Studies Department's expert professors, and to discover the Festival d’Avignon, one of the most important international events of theatre and performing arts.

Please note that our Theatre Summer School will mainly have a theoretical approach.

Places and spaces

How can a space for acting be built in a specific location? What kind of relationship with the spectator is to be established there? What happens when the scenic space takes place in a location which is not dedicated to the theatrical performance (a street, a gym hall, a courtyard of honour…)? How can the perception of the show be modified accordingly? To what extent gesture, costume, light or music are also contributing to build the theatrical space? How do modern technologies alter the building of spaces and the spectator’s perception? What is the meaning conveyed by the notions of “set”, “scenography”, “dramatic space”, “scenic space”, if they still convey some? And what about the way places, spaces and texts are articulated together? How may the text suggest a preexisting space for acting? How does the transition to the stage reinvent it?

These are some of the many questions that our Summer School aims to explore, by multiplying the perspectives and the theoretical approaches (scenographical, dramaturgical, historical, aesthetical, sociological…) and by bringing them together with analysis of shows seen during the Festival d’Avignon 2019.

During this Summer School you will:

  • Develop your knowledge and research through thought-provoking discussion
  • Discover shows and artists at the Festival d'Avignon
  • Multiply scientific, artistic, and friendly encounters
  • Make a presentation based on the Summer School's conferences, workshops and shows (15th - 19th July)
