Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, in cooperation with the Centre Culturel Irlandais and the Ambassade d’Irlande en France, is proud to present  the John Montague Memorial Conference to be held in Paris from 9-10 June 2023.

Born in Brooklyn, brought up in County Tyrone, a student at UCD and Yale University, Paris correspondent of the Irish Times, Professor of English at UCC, recipient of many awards, and Ireland’s first Professor of Poetry, John Montague is a multi-faceted poet. His long poetic career explored many thematics, among which history, politics, and love in its many guises. He was also the author of short stories, essays, and two volumes of memoirs. He cofounded Claddagh records with Garech de Brun. The world-renowned music group, the Chieftains, took their name from one of his short stories, “Death of a Chieftain”. The Sorbonne Nouvelle, which conferred a doctorat honoris causa on John Montague in 2011, is delighted to host a conference which will examine the work and legacy of this poet, for whom France was a second home. He was named Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 2011, and died in Nice in 2016.

Le groupe de musique mondialement connu, les Chieftains, a tiré son nom d'une de ses nouvelles, "Death of a Chieftain". La Sorbonne Nouvelle, qui a conféré un doctorat honoris causa à John Montague en 2011, est ravie d'accueillir une conférence qui examinera l'œuvre et l'héritage de ce poète, pour qui la France était une seconde patrie.
