How have interpreters adapted to their new reality?

When face-to-face meetings were brought to a sudden halt by the Covid-19 pandemic, interpreters were able to continue working thanks to remote communication tools. While some interpreters were already accustomed to remote interpreting, many of us were suddenly confronted with unknown platforms, new and challenging working conditions and unexpected hurdles. We had little time to consult and prepare for this new normal, and yet no other choice but to embrace it.

Roughly a year later, which new working habits have interpreters adopted around the world? Are there significant differences between regions or language combinations? How different is the situation on the private market compared to the institutional market? Are AIIC recommendations followed?

Moreover, how do interpreters perceive this new imposed reality? Do perceptions differ significantly, and if they do, on what basis? Experience, market, age?

Research often provides the opportunity to answer complex questions. This is why, at ESIT, we decided to conduct a universal survey on the topic. Thanks to your responses, the interpreting community will have a realistic and comprehensive overview of the current situation, as well as a reference point for the future.

We’ve decided to focus solely on remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) because of its widespread use and the fundamental difference between this mode and on-site simultaneous interpreting. Therefore, our survey targets interpreters who were accustomed to interpreting meetings simultaneously from a booth before the pandemic. We’re interested in various settings: interpreting remotely from home, from a hub, but also from your traditional workplace.

We will disseminate the findings on public platforms as well as in research journals, in order to make sure that they can help practitioners, researchers, trainers and students around the world to comprehend these daunting changes and be better prepared for the future.
